Cognitive Dissonance And The Dumbass

For anybody interested in hearing more of me, I'll be making an appearance on the next episode of the Cognitive Dissonance podcast.  I had a great time.

I was planning on sending Cecil and Tom a Google Voice message, a kind of a little bit they could play during their email segment.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to connect.  I tried three times last night, but it just didn't work.  Probably because I'm in Canada or something.  Anyway, if you're interested, here's what I would have said:

Hey guys.  It's... uh.. It's the Dumbass!

It's, um... right after we've finished our recording on Sunday... I uh... I hope this gets to you before you've done any editing or anything...

Listen...  I... I just want to apologize for my behaviour.  I think it mostly went fine, but i think I need to apologise once again for calling Tom an asshole... and for making that pass at Cecil. I was drunk, I wasn't myself... maybe I'm hitting the sauce a little too hard these days... I'll work on that. Anyway, I'm sure you'll edit that out, right?

.... and also the part where I broke down blubbering and crying for my mother.  That was highly unprofessional of me, I know.  I'm just... going through some hard times right now, there's no reason to go into it or put that in the episode.

.... And... um... well, I just realized that at one point in the show you may have heard me breathing... in a kind of heavy and ragged manner.  I... um... I was just jogging on the spot in front of my computer.  I'm trying make sure to get my... uh... exercise you know.  Just.... um.. You can feel free to just ignore that and mute my audio for that part.

So... um.. yeah.  I'm sure you'll edit it to sound perfectly fine and your listeners will never notice anything amiss.  And of course it goes without saying that you're not going to actually play this message for your listeners, right?  What am I saying, I don't even need to ask, there's no way you'd do something silly like that!

So... we're good, right? Yeah... yeah, I'm sure we're good.  I think that mostly went rather well, in fact... other than, you know, the stuff I just mentioned.  Anyway, thanks for having me on, I had a really great time... um... I'll just get going now.  Bye!

I'm kind of glad that I wasn't able to pull it off actually, because the topic we were talking about involved child pornography.  The bit about the heavy breathing might have seemed more in poor taste.

.... or maybe that would be a good thing :)

New Stuff Coming Up

It's been a really busy month for me.  I've got some really crazy personal things going on, and i don't want to get into the details but I've been running about for the past month getting dozens of things ready and there's just never enough hours in the day.

The blog and podcast have never been too far from my mind though.  I've got plenty of ideas for articles, and even started working on one before deciding it was a little too technical.  I've got a new podcast episode in the works, and I've been working on getting basic stuff together since a couple of weeks ago, and I've been actively preparing the episode for about a week now.

It's hard to find the time to work on it when I've got so many other things to do, but it's the kind of thing that I just feel like I want to put out there so I'm going to at least finish the episode as soon as possible.

It looks like I'll have a little more free time through parts of June, so I'm going to try and put together some really interesting stuff during my down time.

Thanks for checking in, I hope to have more for you soon!

Delays, delays....

I realize that it's been a couple of weeks since I last posted.  I'm working on the next podcast episode, which I had hoped to complete a few weeks ago as well.

I've got a ton of stuff to do, and fun stuff like my blog and podcast are at the bottom of the list.  But I'm not about to abandon the Dumbasses Guide to Knowledge, I'm constantly getting new ideas for things that I want to write and say.

So please keep checking back.  I'm committed to not letting this blog fall into long disuse.

Happy Birthday To The Dumbasses Guide!

The Dumbasses Guide To Knowledge is one year old this week!  I resolved at the beginning of January to finally set up the website and participate more in the Skeptical community, and promptly began working on some articles and finalizing the website's setup.  I posted my first entries on the 6th, which is tomorrow, though I waited a few days until I had a few articles under my belt before making the website public.  I just looked over the graph of unique visits throughout the year and I like what I see:

2010 Unique Visitors Graph

I think the large increase in August was due to the fact that I discovered Reddit and began posting my favourite articles there, and once those ran out it settled down a bit.  Possibly the end of summer vacation played a role in the drop from September to October as well.

Of course, this is just my post-hoc rationalizations.  It's hard to know exactly what causes trends from month to month.  I'm a little more at a loss to explain the big jump in November.  Perhaps people just liked my latest Ancient Aliens article on stone cutting

In any case, it's the general trend that matters, and it's gratifying to see that the general trend is, in fact, upwards.  My thanks to everybody who visits on a regular basis, it's good to know that the work I put into this website is appreciated.

I'm working on a new podcast episode, and I'm about halfway done.  It looks like this episode will be about 40 minutes.  I decided to do some extra stuff in addition to reading out one of my articles, so for those of you who've already read all my stuff and don't care to hear it over again, you can just skip that part.

I will be doing a post game analysis of my interview with Karl Mamer on his podcast The Conspiracy Skeptic, then I'll read my article on the importance of definitions.  After that, I'll make a book recommendation in the Dumbasses Book Club, and I will look at visitor comments and emails, especially those regarding the topic of the last podcast episode on Ancient Aliens.

That should be out sometime in the next few days.  I hope you guys enjoy it!

New Entries

Hey Dumbasses!

I try to update this blog on average about twice a week.  However, it's been about two weeks since my last post.  I realize that this isn't necessarily a huge amount of time to go between blog posts, but I feel the need to at least put something in here right now until I'm able to get around to posting a more substantial article.

I've got several things that I want to write about, but there always seems to be extra work to do so that I can make just enough money to not quite be able to pay all my bills.  It's hard to make time to sit down and write a good blog entry when there are so many other pressing things to do.  But I'll get around to it soon.  My thanks to everybody who has written to tell me how much they enjoy my articles, the encouragement really helps to provide me with the motivation to soldier on!

Help A Dumbass Out?

I'm not too proud to admit that I'm a pauper.  I do freelance work in web design and programming, and lately it's been getting harder and harder to find the decent paying jobs.  I'm branching out into other fields such as freelance writing in order to make ends meet.  I've really enjoyed writing articles for this blog, and I've been having fun with the writing projects that I've engaged in so far.  But it's hard to get enough good projects to keep from going into the red.

I've gotten email and private messages from several people who enjoy my writing style and my ability to research a subject.  If you enjoy my articles and would like to hire me to engage in some writing project for you, my rates are very reasonable.  Send me an email and we can talk about what you would like done.

I also do website design and programming.  I can design and set up your entire website for you for a reasonable fee.  I designed this website that you're looking at right now, and I've also done custom work on the blog software in order to make it behave as I want it to.

Consider this website to be a showcase of my abilities.  If you like what you see, contact me and we'll talk.

I'm also not too proud to accept charity.  If you would like to make a donation, you can send it through Paypal to my email address

I will take your donation as a vote of confidence in my ability to run this site and as a sign that you want me to devote more time to adding new content.  If I get a good amount of donations, I'll consider updating the website to be a professional project, and so will devote much more time and energy to it.

I might even consider setting up extra content such as a podcast or an extra section for skeptical resources like basic critical thinking tutorials.

So if you enjoy my work and want to help support me so that I can keep this up indefinitely, please consider helping a dumbass out.

New Feature On The Blog

I finally got around to getting my hands dirty and looking at the source code for this blog software to make some changes that I've been wanting to do since I started.

Each entry will now be attributed with keywords, on some blogs also known as tags, which list several themes that the entry talks about.  So now if you're reading an article I wrote and are interested in seeing other articles in which I mentioned the same topic, just click on the appropriate keyword and the software will generate a list of articles that match.

I'm going to try and develop a list of all the keywords used, and I'll place that somewhere easy to access.
